Web Hosting Technologies in Malaysia

This article will go into the different technologies you will find provided by the web hosting companies in Malaysia. When subscribing to a web host, you definitely want to find one that will suit your needs. One of the factors is the technology behind their web hosting services. Web hosting companies such as MyCloud offer so many options that it can get confusing. Let’s start making sense of it all!

Windows Hosting

Windows hosting occurs when your web server is being run off the Windows operating system. This is a very popular operating system for big corporations. I will choose Windows hosting if I’m planning to run Active Server Pages (ASP) as my server scripting language. Another reason you want to use Windows hosting is when you are employing the Microsoft SQL Server or Microsoft Access databases. Some programmers are of the opinion that Windows hosting provides the best security. As with most Windows stuff, a major downside of running Windows on your server is the cost. You typically have to pay to install this on your server. Now this can get annoying especially when it’s time for an upgrade.

Unix Hosting

Unix Hosting is the first server operating system, ever. This describes those being run on the Unix operating system. It has a solid reputation of being stable and very reliable.

Linux Hosting

Similarly, those being run on the Linux operating system are called Linux hosting. Linux used to be the default choice when it came to web hosting. While still very popular today (Many companies in Malaysia use Linux hosting), it has lost some of its appeal after the emergence of the Windows OS. It does have a very big advantage over Windows though – its cost. It is usually much cheaper.

Linux Hosting

Typically found on Linux or Unix servers, CGI are executable scripts that are placed on the server to provide interactive and dynamic websites.

We’ve mentioned this previously but let us repeat here. ASP is a scripting technology (server-side) invented by Microsoft. It allows you to build dynamic websites by placing this code within the coding of your web pages. Before the page is returned to the browser, the server will execute the code. You can also use javaScript and VBScript.

PHP is a very popular scripting language. It is completely free and is used as an alternative to ASP. Similar to ASP, it can be placed within the HTML code of your web pages. You will often find it used in unison with Apache (web server). For web development purposes, PHP is very well suited. One of the major advances is that it supports many databases, such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Informiz, ODBC and others.

If you have been hanging out with web developers lately, I’m sure you’ve heard of Dreamweaver. This is a software developed by Adobe to help programmers develop websites. You don’t very intensive knowledge of web development in order to build websites if you’re using Dreamweaver. It can support many web technologies such as JavaScript, CSS, ASP.NET, ColdFusion, and PHP.

If you’re planning to sell online, it is quite likely you will need a secure server. This allows you to send data that is encrypted.

Those are most of the basic technologies behind web hosting. I hope you enjoyed them!

How Much Disk Space for Hosting

disk space web hosting

How much disk space will you need for your website?

That’s a good question isn’t it?

It depends on how big your website is and how much rich media you want to upload.

If it’s a small or medium website, you will probably want to look for a web hosting package with a disk space of between 1GB to 5GB of hard disk space.

Things like HTML pages are actually very small in size. It’s easy and quite cheap to host if your website consists only of text and HTML. But most are not like that.

For example, look at the size of the images.  These can be quite big and are typically larger than the web page itself!

The typical amount of space a HTML page needs is only about 50kb.

So this means that even if you have 100 pages but they are only made up of HTML, then you won’t need a lot of space. But if you have even one video, it might take up more space than your entire website!

Most web hosting packages will provide you with varying amounts of disk space depending on your needs. Here are some example:

  1. Hostgator Web Hosting Packages
  2. MyCloud Web Hosting Packages
  3. BlueHost Web Hosting Packages

If you look at them carefully, you would can see that they all have many features. Some of them are the same while others are different. There are also packages at different prices so they can provide for different needs.

It is best for you to properly plan the kind of content you need for your website first before you decide on a webhosting company. This will definitely save you a lot of problem if you decide you need more space in the future. Sure, some might just be a simple upgrade, might in other cases in won’t be so easy. And if you’re doing it for a company, it will just make you look bad.

Choosing Web Hosting Malaysia – Things to Consider

Like I’ve mentioned before, choosing a good web hosting Malaysia provider is not exactly an easy task.  There are many factors to be considered. In this post, I will examine some of the things that you will have to look out for when attempting to host your website with someone else.
24 hour web hosting support in malaysia

24-hour support

One of the most important things you want to ensure is that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is going to provide you with 24-hour support, 365 days a year. If they don’t, then what happens if your website goes down on a Friday night during your peak season? Server crashes are quite common, regardless if you’re using Windows or Linux as your operating system.

Some ISPs only offer email support. But what happens if you need an issue solved immediately?

If you ask me, phone support is critical. For example, Hostgator (US) and Malaysia web hosting provider MyCloud provides 24-hour phone and email support.

Web Hosting from a Girl!

Usually when you rad about web hosting blogs online – or any other technology-related blogs, for that matter – they are written by dudes. So i thought it would be interesting to start a blog about web hosting from a girl’s perspective. Not a particularly tech-y girl at that.

When I tell my friends about this blog all of them asked me – Why web hosting?

There is a very simple explanation.

I’ve recently bought a web hosting account for my company and was surprised at how many little details there were that I needed to take into account when buying one. So I decided to start writing my own blog for this! If everything turns out well then I’ll start blogs on other topics as well!

Funny picture on web development

The picture above might be about web development, but it also applies to web hosting. On the surface, it seems like a very simple decision, but it really isn’t! There are so many small decisions that you have to make that make it so annoying.

  1. What kind of server do you want?
  2. What kind of operating system (they call it OS)?
  3. How much space do you need?

Erm… space also refers to bandwidth and at the same time hard drive space. Sigh.

So it was quite interesting and tough at the same time.

Now that I’m in charge of the company’s website, I have to learn more about web hosting in general in case I get asked funny questions during meetings.

So this blog will serve as both a personal notebook and a way for me to share with the world. If it’s worth sharing anyway.

I’m still trying to figure out what topics I want to write for this blog but rest assured that I will find something interesting for you to read about soon. There are so many ways to go about doing this!

Learn about web hosting

Let’s say you’re starting out with your first blog. There actually is a lot for you to learn about how to run one. And one of the basics is web hosting and how to find a good web hosting provider. When it’s your first time, all the technology and jargon and buzzwords can start getting your head spinning. Even worse, most information technology (IT) experts can’t or won’t explain them to you in words you understand. Especially here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Sometimes I get the annoying feeling that it’s on purpose.

So that’s why we want to give you start this hosted wordpress website to provide you with all the answers you need. By the way, WordPress.com (the one you’re on now) is hosted by WordPress, but you can also get a WordPress.org one where you get all the fun of hosting it yourself.

Web hosting is actually not that difficult especially if you find a good web hosting company that has a lot of support articles and beginners’ guides. If you’re based in Malaysia, it might also make sense for you to find a Malaysian web hosting company to host your website.

In our series, it will be important for you to at least understand the web hosting basics such as what exactly is a web host and what they can do for you. Of course, by now I hope you know that a website needs a server (basically a computer) and has to have an online connection to the Internet.

Basically what you want is to have your web host give you an account on one of its servers and you can upload your website there. This usually entails associating your domain name with the files that are located on those servers. The first time you do it, it will take around 24-48 hours for your domain name to propagate all over the world.
